Help Build Community, One Volunteer at a Time

A safe, affordable place to call home is a foundation for stability, wellbeing, and connection. Creating a successful home share experience takes more than matching housemates. It takes thoughtful resources, accessible communication, and ongoing support.

That’s where volunteers come in. Affordable Living for the Aging (ALA) welcomes volunteers to support our Shared Housing Program throughout Los Angeles County.

ALA primarily serves older adults, while also helping adults of all ages find affordable housing options through shared housing. Our work brings people together around a common need for housing that is affordable, supportive, and suited to their circumstances.

Whether you enjoy engaging with local organizations, researching resources, improving platform UX, sharing your language skills, or offering a friendly check-in, there’s an opportunity to put your skills to work in support of our program and the people it serves.

We’re especially interested in people who know their neighborhoods. From senior centers and public libraries to community centers, faith-based organizations, and other local gathering places, volunteers with established local ties can help us reach people who may benefit from ALA’s Shared Housing Program. By introducing ALA to local organizations and raising awareness of our services, volunteers can help people discover housing options and resources they might not otherwise know about.

Volunteer opportunities span a range of interests and skills:

  • Community Outreach: Help spread the word and introduce our program to local organizations and residents.
  • Research & Resources: Identify and organize information about community services, benefits, and other resources for people seeking affordable housing.
  • UX & Digital Support: Help improve the usability and accessibility of our digital tools and platforms.
  • Marketing & Creative Support: Create engaging, accessible materials that help us share our mission.
  • Translation & Language Access: Make program information and conversations more accessible to people who speak languages beyond English.
  • Senior Check-Ins: Foster positive shared housing experiences through regular conversations and feedback.
  • Move-In & Welcome Support: Help participants prepare for a move and feel at home in a new living arrangement.

Some roles involve working directly with participants and local organizations, while others can be completed remotely and independently. We’re looking for people with a range of skills, experiences, and perspectives who want to contribute to work that matters.

You don’t need to be a housing expert to make a difference. Whether you bring professional expertise, speak another language, know your neighborhood inside and out, or simply want to lend a helping hand, there’s more than one way to get involved.
